PNW-RMN: General Conference 2004

OUR WITNESS AS PARENTS CAN CHANGE OUR CHURCH

General Conference 2004

When you come with UM parents to Pittsburgh May 1-2, 2004, bring a 2 x 2 inch picture of your gay loved one.

You will be among the hundreds who wear a badge of honor in support of all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender United Methodist Christians. With a photo of your loved one, it reads, "MY CHILD IS OF SACRED WORTH."

The General Conference still claims in theory that “homosexual practice is incompatible with Christian teaching.” But in our families we know better, and so do sound Bible scholars.

Let’s make our voices heard—in our churches, our Annual Conferences, and at General Conference in Pittsburgh.

STRATEGIES FOR PARENTS WITNESS WEEKEND

Pittsburgh, May 1-2, 2004

Parents Witness Weekend and Rally will be Saturday and Sunday, May 1-2, 2004 with either hotels or free home hospitality available. Bishop Fritz Mutti, whose sons died of AIDS, will keynote a PRN breakfast on Saturday morning.

  1. Organize to send, or better yet, join a delegation of lesbians and gays, parents and supporters to go to Pittsburgh.
  2. In Pittsburgh meet dozens of other UM parents of l/g/b/ts. Attend worship, rallies, planning sessions, meetings, and join in peaceful demonstrations.
  3. Talk with (lobby) General Conference members from your area and elsewhere, asking them to support legislation for openness and diversity.
  4. Bring a 2x2 photo of your child for a “My Child is of Sacred Worth” badge.
  5. Make a human silhouette cut-out with a quote, perhaps from your child, on their problems with and their hope for the church. Help to display it.
  6. Participate in peaceful, respectful public demonstrations at the conference site, letting members know our stand.
  7. Return home informed, inspired and committed to work for equality
